Textile Dosimetry

Left: a solution after absorption of different dose of radiation
Right: the textile dosimeter after absorption of inhomogeneous dose of radiation

Flat/film dosimetric systems are used in radiotherapy dosimetry as indicators of dose distribution in the process of planning and verification of tumor treatment. Range of advantages over disadvantages of these dosimeters is discussed in literature. However, I have proposed Tthe construction of flat textile- and fiber-based systems, sensitive to UV and ionizing radiation. They are believed to better map the body shapes and to find applications in wide health protection area. Components vulnerable to radiation were selected and used for preparation of the systems. The proposed ones change their colour to e.g. deep red if exposed to radiation. Schematically textile dosimetry is shown below:

If the textile dosimeter is non-uniformly irradiated, only the irradiated part changes colour. This phenomenon is used for dose distribution measurements in 2-dimensions.

The intensity of colour depends on absorbed dose of radiation. The higher the dose the more intense colour appears as shown in the below figure:

Light remission measurements of irradiated dosimeters allow determining the range of textile dosimeter response towards the absorbed dose.

Studies on textile dosimeters have lead to several compositions suitable for different dose range measurements. Tests carried out in radiotherapy departments have revealed potential applications of the designed systems to radiotherapy dosimetry. The textile dosimeters can be measured with flat-bed scanners.
